Valentine’s Day is upon us. Our party will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 from 2:00 to end of school. To reduce the risk of hurt feelings, if your child is going to give Valentine card to anyone, they should give one to everyone. Here is the class list.

Idaho History Music Program

I look forward to seeing you at the Mill Creek 4th Grade Idaho History Program next Monday night, January 30th, at 6:30 p.m. in the new auditorium at the Middleton High School. Doors will open at 6:00. Students need to be in the music room by 6:15. Parents should go straight to the auditorium. Students should wear nice jeans and a plain shirt (no writing) that is either red, or white, or blue. These 4th graders have learned so much about Idaho! I hope you can come to support your student and appreciate all their hard work. See you next Monday!

Welcome back to school! A few new changes for everyone to be aware of:

Jack is back! Jack was gone for a few months and has come back to us safe and sound, so our class number is back up to 26 and we are a whole class once again!

Our class has been chosen for a very special opportunity - having a student teacher! Miss Maggie Sciales (pronounced ski alice) comes to us from Boise State University and will be with us all semester. She will graduate with her teaching degree this spring. She is excited to be with us and the kids are equally excited to have two teachers to love and adore them.

New schoolwide expectations will be rolled out next week. There will be an assembly next Thursday to explain the new expectations for the students.

Christmas Party!

Our Christmas Party will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 from 12:45-1:45. Each student needs to bring a wrapped dollar store gift that would be appropriate for a girl or a boy. We will then be able to play a gift exchange game and everyone will end up with a prize! We will also need treats and volunteers to be here. Please let me know in advance if you want to bring something or if you want to be here. The kids really enjoyed decorating a cookie last time so we could do that again to. I really appreciate all of your support.

P.S. I know in these economic times it may be difficult to provide a wrapped gift - please let me know as soon as possible so that I can find another way for your child to have a gift. If you wait until the last minute to inform me, I won't be able to help out and they may not get to participate.

Christmas Food Drive

Every year our school likes to donate "kid friendly" food items to the Middleton Food Bank. This year we are focusing on Peanut Butter, Jelly (not homemade), and Cereal. Of course, you are also welcome to donate any other non perishable items as well. These donated items go to helping our community's families. Send items to school this week and next. Apangea Challenge

I sent home a number of book order packets. There are a few ways to order. You can send the order form back to school with a check attached made out to Scholastic. Or you can order online! Go to http://www.scholastic.com/ and follow these steps:

1. go to book clubs page and sign up. Register and pick a password. When prompted, use the one time class code: HDX4T. This code ensures that the orders are sent to my class which earns us free books for the classroom!

2. Select the books you would like to order. There are many more books available online than just the ones I sent home.

3. Send your orders to me by the due date written on the paper orders sent home.

Progress Reports

Seeds and Plants

Our new Science unit will begin next week. I am asking for my students to please bring in one or two packages of seeds to share with the class for our seed study. They will also need an empty egg carton. At the end of the unit each student will bring home one dozen baby plants to begin growing at home! Thank you.

Spelling Changes

On Monday, I will give a pre-test of the 2nd grade words (not including the vocabulary words from the story). If they miss 2 words or less, I will move them to a different “just right” list based on the data I’ve collected in the classroom, (if you are curious stop on by and I’ll show you the theory behind it). The first 10 words are based on the rule, the rest are vocabulary words from the story. Students should know their words and what each word means. If a student misses more than 2 words, they will stay on the grade level list (list #1).

If a student loses a list or forgets what list they are on, you can go to spellingcity.com and print off a new list. Lists are now number (1, 2, or 3) for easy identification on spelling city. I will also send home a paper copy on Mondays. Please feel free to call or e-mail any concerns.

Valentine's Day Party!!

I sent this newsletter home about a week ago. Here it is in case it didn't quite make it home :-)

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. We have been busy making hearts and talking about Valentine’s Day traditions! We have also discussed how there are many types of love celebrated on Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day is on a Monday so we will have the party that afternoon from 2:00-2:45. Anyone who wants to attend is welcome to stop by. We will have a Valentine Bingo station, maybe a cupcake or cookie decorating station (help needed to make this happen (-:) and a valentine delivery station. It should be a lot of fun! I have bags that would be great to make a take home party gift if we bring in wrapped items or pencils, or other valentine type items. I try not to sugar them up too much for ya’, but if you would like to send items for the decorating, or the bags, or other tasty treats that would make our party extra nice! Thanks again for all that you do!

Report Card Fun!

I just finished report cards with 1 hour to spare! Whew! For the most part I continue to be amazed at the wonderful improvements our darling children are making. They are all working so hard and are so eager to continue to learn more. What a wonderful group of children, thank you for sharing them with me.

On the report card you will see quarter one grades, then quarter two grades, followed by a S1 grade - that stands for a cumulative of 1st and 2nd quarter grades. In the past, we let the quarter grades stand for themselves and did not average them together so that is new and different with our new system.

I will send home a paper copy of the report card next week. Have a wonderful long weekend!

This week we started our new reading unit. The genre is expository text. Expository text gives information. It tells people something. It uses facts about real events or people. It presents information in a clear way, and gives events in the order in which they happen. Our new reading theme is “Look Again”. The students will be learning a lot of information about animal camouflage. If you have any books at home about our new theme please bring them in to share with the class! Also students may go to the Animal camouflage link found on on the Mill Creek Website under student. Have fun exploring this site at home too! We will have a special guest come and visit out classroom from Deer Flat Wildlife refuge later this month.

Field Trip Update

We are only able to have 2 chaperones on this field trip. If parents would still like to attend, i believe that they will let you sit with us, but you will need to follow and pay for your own tickets. Tickets are $5. I wish we could take all of the parents that would like to come!

The Nutcracker Field Trip!

Second grade has just found out that we get to go on a field trip in 9 DAYS! Since second grade's musical performances are spread out between the four quarterly assemblies, we are being treated to a real live artistic performance of "The Nutcracker." If you would like to be a chaperone (space is limited) please let me know ASAP, as slots fill up quickly. It will be on Dec. 8 (Wednesday), and we will be leaving the school right away and we will get back by lunch.

Halloween/Harvest Pary

I had one of my volunteer parents call other parents who signed up at the beginning of the year to plan the Halloween Party. It will be this Wednesday October 27 at 10:30 until lunch. We will be sending a lot of the treats home instead of eating too much here :-) Any and all parents are welcome to come, we will have a game station, a craft station, a decorating station. We only have 35 minutes after specials at the end of the day so we will put it in a scooby doo video. Hopefully the classroom will be clean and ready for conferences that night!

Scarecrow Contest

Scarecrow Contest
2nd Grade is competing in a scarecrow making contest! This contest is sponsored by Coleman Homes. 1st place is $750 which would go straight into our classroom funds! We need all of our Mill Creek patrons to go to the Coleman homes subdivision This is located off of Hwy 44 - If you're driving west through Middleton, turn right on Cemetery Road then left on Willis Rd. If you're driving east, before town, turn left on Hartley and then right on Willis Rd. You will see signs that will lead to the entrance on Willis. You will see our Coleman signs and flags at the Willis Rd entrance then follow the signs pointing you to the Sales Center where the display will be set up.

FRIDAY = Voting starts at 11am-7pm EVERY DAY Mon-Sun until Halloween Oct 31st. Voting ends Oct 31st at 7pm.

Time Flies!

Time sure flies in second grade when we are having so much fun. :-) I finally figured out how to have a separate page for the spelling lists. I will do my best to post each new list on Monday evening so that you have access to it all week. If I forget, please feel free to send me a friendly reminder via e-mail or phone. My next goal for the blog is to figure out how to scan in the math homework each day for lost and forgotten math assignments.

Our first real spelling test is tomorrow, yikes! So is our first real reading comprehension test! Our first math test was last week and will be coming home tomorrow.

Speaking of math tests. There are two pages stapled together. There is a full color math test and a copied math test. For any problem that your student missed, you can open up the full color test and view instructions on how to solve the problem. Take a moment when you get a math test back to go over the missed problems with your child. Making a mistake is a great way to learn something new!

I will be creating a homework calendar soon. I will try to figure out how to attach that to this blog as well in case it goes missing. Thanks for all of your wonderful support at home!

Week 1

Whew! We have made it through the first week of school! We are having a great time in second grade. We are learning new procedures and remembering old procedures. We are discovering our new room and getting to know each other. We are reviewing a lot of first grade material right now to get our brains geared up for learning in second grade.

A fun new procedure we are doing school wide is called Mustangs in Motion. We do stretches and structured movement. It is based on brain research and what the brain needs in order to learn. I do it with the students and I am amazed at the difference in myself and the kids! It makes me feel great and excited for the day. Even though it is only scheduled for two days a week, we do it every day in my class.

Homework is starting! I will try to be consistent in sending homework on Mondays through Thursdays. Friday homework will only be what they did not complete in class (which will hopefully not be very often). Friday spelling tests are starting this Friday. The list consists of words they need to know in second grade. The words are: second, grade, Berg (as in Mrs. Berg), Larsen (as in Miss Larsen), team, tickets, friend, spelling, writing, and art. Some of the words are hard so start establishing those great study habits!

Saturday September 11, 2010 there are signups for Caldwell Bowl Junior Bowler league from 11am to 4pm. The ages range from 7 years old up to 20. For more information call Caldwell Bowl at 459-3400.

IRI testing has started in second grade. Make sure your kids get off to the best start by getting a good night's sleep and a good breakfast. Breakfast is available for all students in the cafe` every morning from 7:50 to 8:10.

No school on Monday September 6th for Labor Day! If you are traveling, travel safe and I will see everyone back on Tuesday!

September 10th is spirit day so proudly show off those Mustang Shirts!

Reminder: Students are not allowed on the playground before 7:50 in the morning, please do not drop your kids off before this time, we do not have anyone available to watch over them until 7:50. The first bell does ring at 8:10 every morning, I know I am having a hard time getting used to this!

I am so excited to be working with this group of kids, they are so wonderful and we are going to have a GREAT year! I am offering a prize to the students who log on with their parents to view this blog...good luck everyone!

The Dragons Return
By: Miss Larsen’s Third Grade Class 2010

Once upon a time in a far away land called Canastasia, there lived a selfish princess named Annabelle. Annabelle wouldn’t watch out for herself and worried only about clothes, food, bossing people around, and how her hair looked. She would always tell people what to do and what not to do. That’s how she was. She never listened to anyone else. This habit soon becomes a problem, and made her problems worse.

George, the dragon, was in a secret underground tunnel under Princess Annabelle’s Castle for 1,000 years and felt it was time to escape. George’s wife, Tina, and the baby dragons were slowly starving to death and were very unhappy. Tina, the female dragon, started digging a tunnel to the surface just outside the castle gates. The dragons overheard the two knights talking about wanting to marry Princess Annabelle. The dragons decided to capture the princess so that they can gain power over the kingdom and escape the dungeon. George snuck up on her in the garden one night and said, “Come with me, if you value your life.” She answered, “No way!” George drew in a deep breath, and breathed a stream of fire directly at her hair. Annabelle finally gave up and went but first said, “Fine, I’ll go with you, but you better not burn my hair anymore.” George happily led her down their tunnel.

The two knights, Brave Benjamin and Scaredy-Cat Joe, noticed her disappearance first thing the next morning. The king sent them on a mission to find Princess Annabelle. The two knights started looking for her and while they were looking for her, Tina (the mom dragon) saw them and headed toward them. The two knights ran when they saw her and hid in the tunnel entrance, and heard the bossy princess yell, “Get me out of here right now, I need to check my hair!” Tina heard her scream and charged after the knights. Scaredy-Cat Joe ran further into the tunnel to hide, while Brave Benjamin went out to lead the dragon away. Tina flew away and Benjamin thought he scared her away, so returned to the cave to find the princess.
Scaredy-Cat Joe turned the corner in the tunnel and saw Princess Annabelle, George and the baby dragons. George was ready to attack. Scaredy-Cat Joe closed his eyes and held out his sword. Then, Scaredy-Cat Joe heard a horrible yell that said, “Dude, open your eyes or you’ll die, dummy.” He opened his eyes just in time to see a baby dragon open its mouth to shoot flames at him, so he jumped quickly to the side. When Brave Benjamin heard the scream, he started running for the cave.

Benjamin quickly saw what was happening, grabbed Scaredy-Cat Joe and ran all the way back to the castle, leaving the bossy princess behind. George and the little baby dragons followed them and began to attack the castle, Tina saw them and joined right in. The soldiers were frightened and tried to hide behind the throne, under the dinner tables in the great hall, and anywhere else they could find. The dragons entered, sniffed out all the people, and ate them all. It was a sad day in Canastasia, Princess Annabelle no longer had anyone to boss around. Everyone lived happily ever after, well, at least the dragons did, the people were left in pieces.

Online Lunch Payments

Middleton School District’s Food Service Department is excited to announce that district staff members will now be able to participate in the new online meal account prepayment system. This convenient, easy and secure online prepayment service will allow you to deposit money into your school meal account at any time. This service also provides you with the ability to view your account balance through a web site called MyNutrikids.com.

You will also have the ability to print out a copy of your recent purchases online via a history report which lists all dates and times of breakfast and/or lunch purchases within the past thirty days.

These new services will be available April 23, 2010.

To access these services:
1. Simply go to the district web site at www.msd134.org.
2. Click on any of the schools in the district and then the food service page.
3. Click on the MyNutrikids.com link. From this site you will create your account and add money to your school meal account. All you need is your name, district staff ID number and school ZIP code. The instructions listed on the back of this page will guide you through the easy online account set up process.

Things to know:
 If you are going to set up an account for your child in this school district you can add your own meal account during the process.
 If you have more than one child in the district you can handle all online prepayments from the same online account.
 Payments may be made through an existing PayPal account or with a major credit or debit card.
 In order to use the online prepayment service, a small convenience fee for each transaction will be assessed to cover the bank fees. The convenience fee is $1.75 per deposit transaction. If you are placing money into multiple meal accounts (ex. your meal account and your child’s meal account) you will only be assessed the $1.75 fee once per deposit transaction. Middleton School District will not profit from the use of this site.

We are very excited to offer these new services and are confident this new system will benefit you and our District. However, if you choose not to take advantage of the online prepayment service you may continue to make advance payments via check, which should be made payable to the Middleton School Foodservice. Please write your full name on the check.

- You will first need your staff ID number that is used in the NUTRIKIDS POS system; you may get this number by contacting my office.
- Go to the district website at www.msd134.org then click on any school and go to the Food Service page, click on the link to MyNutrikids.com OR go to www.MyNutrikids.com.
- Click Sign Up and enter the required information.

NOTE: Create only one MyNutrikids.com account for everyone in the family.

How to Make a Deposit

- Click MyKids.
- Click Deposit Money located next to Add Student.
- Enter an amount in the Deposit column next to your name.
- Click Calculate.
- Click Make Deposit.
- You will be directed to the PayPal web site to enter your payment information.
o You have the option to use your existing PayPal account or a major credit card to make your payment.
o If you are using your PayPal account, enter your email address and PayPal password to continue.
o If you are using a credit card, enter the required information. For your protection, MyNutrikids.com will not store your financial information.
- Click Pay Now when finished.
- Click Pay once again to finish the process.

NOTE: If you previously created a MyNutrikids.com account for your child who attends school in another district you will be required to create a separate MyNutrikids.com account for your own meal account. Also, you cannot add money to other staff member meal accounts from your MyNutrikids.com account.

Making a Thermometer

Throughout the past few weeks, we have been observing and studying the properties of water. This week we looked at the differences between hot and cold water. An easy and fun connection that you and your child can do at home is to make a thermometer.
A thermometer is an instrument that measures the temperature. Temperature is measured in a scale called Fahrenheit (by most people in the United States) and in Celsius or Centigrade (used by scientists and by people in many other countries). The point where water freezes is 32 degrees Fahrenheit (F for short) and 0 degrees Celsius (C). The point where water boils is 212 degrees F and 100 degrees C.

Thermometers help us know what the weather will be like. If it will be 90°F outside, we're not going to put on a winter coat. Or if it's below zero, we won't be wearing shorts. Here's a way to show how a simple thermometer works.

1. Pour tap water into the bottle, filling about 1/8 to a 1/4 of the bottle and add
a couple of drops of food coloring.
2. Put the straw in the bottle, but don't let the straw touch the bottom (DO NOT
DRINK THE MIXTURE).
3. Use the modeling clay to seal the neck of the bottle, so the straw stays in place.
4. Now hold your hands on the bottle and watch what happens to the mixture in the
bottle. Try putting the bottle into a bowl of really hot water or ice water.
5. Take a picture of you and your thermometer to bring into class! (Or email it to

Leprechaun Traps-Due March 15

Be the first kid on your block to catch a real live leprechaun!
Make a Leprechaun Trap!

1. Gather together all kinds of scrap material to make the perfect trap. Use glue, string, small boxes, wood, decorations, anything to make your trap. For safety sake ask an adult for help, and be sure not to use anything that would hurt our leprechaun.

2. The smaller the trap the better. Remember your catching a Leprechaun, not a giant!

3. Be ready to explain how your trap works.

4. Bring your trap to school on March 15th so we have 2 days to share our traps with the rest of the class. We will set our traps on Tuesday afternoon, and hope to catch a leprechaun. We will also put them on display during parent teacher conferences.

HINT: Leprechauns are tricky fellows. They like shiny things, things that glitter, and gold coins. They are also naughty and often disobey signs. They often hide their gold in a pot at the end of the rainbow and their favorite color is green. You have to think like a leprechaun to catch one!

Boise Art Museum came out today and did a community based art project with the kids. They also gave out free tickets for the families! It is good for the student with 2 free guests. What a great opportunity to see more of what our community has to offer. The tickets are good through June.
